One of the most enduring conversations in college sport, and an area of heated debate and dispute, is the question of how to achieve equity and fairness in a system that has embraced the segregation of women and men. Even though segregation in athletics inherently discourages equity, the concept of separate but equal (some say separate and equal) is a central organizing principle and defining feature of the college sport landscape. In this episode, we discuss these issues with Jennifer Hoffman, Professor in the College of Education at the University of Washington and author of Understanding Collegiate Esports: A Practitioners Guide to Developing Community and Competition and College Sports & Educational Values in Competition and Kirsten Hextrum, associate professor in the School of Language, Culture, and Society and coordinator of the College Student Services Administration Program at Oregon State University, author of Special Admission: How College Sport Recruitment Favors White Suburban Athletes. This episode’s release coincides with the publication of a special issue in the Journal of Gender & Women in Higher Education entitled Separate but Equal? Women-Identifying Athlete Experiences & Intersectionality in Intercollegiate Athletics. Co-editors of the issue are Jennifer Lee Hoffman, Kirsten Hextrum and Valyncia Raphael-Woodward.
